03/23/19 Fishing Report for Lay Lake: (See Fishing Report Archive at bottom of page)
The water is a little warmer and both largemouth and spotted bass are being caught in good
numbers. Crappie are being caught along the old river bank ledges below the lake. Bass are
in the upper river on the banks, banks with riprap and heavy cover and major creeks along
the banks with cover. Jerk bait and swim baits, including swimming spinnerbaits are working.


Description of the Lake:
Lay Lake is a 12,000 acre lake located about 30 miles south of Birmingham, Alabama. It lies
on the Coosa River below Lay Dam, and is a favorite lake for Spotted and Largemouth Bass
fishing as well as crappie. It has about 300 miles of shoreline. It has a lot of submerged
brush,boat docks, and deep banks that is the ideal cover for fish. The are many stretches of
shoreline that is accessible for fishing from the bank, including many areas nearby boat
launch ramps around the lake. It can be fished from a canoe or kayak, john boat, bass boat
or the family pontoon,

Spring:
Spring is a good time for fly fishing bluegil and redear sunfish, largemouth and spotted bass,

This is a good time for bluegil and redear sunfish as well as largemouth, spotted bass hybrid
striped bass and striped bass.
Fall:
Fall it a great time for spotted and largemouth bass and crappie.
Winter:
Winter months are good for largemouth and spotted bass.

01/23/19 During the winter months of the year, bass fishing is the top fish that is
pursued. Both largemouth and spotted bass are generally found in the deeper
water of channels and creeks as well as both submerged and above water river
ledges. Deep diving crankbaits and jigs work good at this time. .

02/23/19 Bass are being caught on the river ledges of the upper river and along
steep dropoffs and deep creek channels of the lower lake. Dropping single spin
spinner baits, deep diving crank baits and jigs with trailers will work. Crappie are
still deep and slow to catch but will be moving into shallow water very soon.
