Saltwater Fly Fishing For Amberjack with Perfect Fly
by Alan Snider
Amberjack are a southern deep water fish, but can be chummed up from the bottom
and caught on a fly rod. They are normally in the 10 to 30 pound range, but can grow to
over 100 pounds.
They are found along the Atlantic coast mostly south of Cape Hatteras and all the way
to Brazil in deep water around wrecks and reefs with small fish found closer to shore.
They feed on any baitfish, squid and flying fish and can be fished with large streamers,
poppers, chum flies, and deceivers size 1/0 to 5/0. You should also use a 12 to 15
weight outfit with a heavy leader.
The best way to fish them is by chumming them up and casting to them. Just
remember they are a very tough fish and very difficult to land.
