Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - Allegheny River
Pennsylvania
Fly Line:
We recommend using a 5 weight fly line. It would deliver most flies that are ideal for most of the
fly fishing. If you fish streamers and larger nymphs, then you should consider using a 6 weight,
floating fly line. You may want to use a sinking tip line for some streamer fishing.
Fly Rod:
We recommend a nine foot long fly rod for the 5 and 6 weight lines. A moderately fast to fast
action would be our preference.
Fly Reel:
The reels for the 5 and 6 weight rods should have good drags. They should be smooth and
adjust to fine increments. There are some big brown and rainbow trout in the Delaware River
and you don't want to loose one because of an inadequate drag.
Leaders:
You should probably use at least a 7 1/2 foot leader anywhere you fish. In some situations
you may need to use a 12 leader or even longer including the tippet. We suggest you have
them in sizes ranging from a 0X for streamers, up to 6X for small dry flies.
Tippet:
You should have extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Waders:
I would not want to fish the Allegheny River anywhere without waders. We prefer breathable
waders.
Wading Boots:
Felt soles would be our choice for wading boots.
Wading Staff:
A wading staff would be optional. It certainly doesn't hurt to have one and we recommend it be
used. These are tailwaters subject to dam discharges.
Flies:
The Allegheny River has some great hatches for a tailwater. There's mayflies, stoneflies and
caddis. We recommend "Perfect Fly" Trout Flies. We have specific imitations of everything
that exist in the Allegheny River that the trout eat. The flies are not only as realistic as you will
find on the commercial market, they are the most effective at catching trout. We have several
customers that have used our flies successfully on this river. If you haven't done so already,
please give them a try.
