Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - Barren Fork Creek
Missouri
Fly Line:
We are recommending a 4 or 5 weight, floating fly line for all of the fishing. There are
some anglers that prefer a 6 weight fly floating fly line for heavier nymphs and
streamers.
Leaders:
Leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for midges and small
dry flies. Lengths ranging from nine feet up to twelve feet in length are suggested.
Tippets:
Extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X should be available for the leaders we list
above.
Fly Rods:
We suggest either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod for each line size you choose to fish. That
will handle about anything you will catch from Barren Fork Creek. It should have a
medium fast to fast action and be nine feet in length.
Fly Reels:
The fly reel you use for the 4, 5 or 6 weight line should be light and have good drags,
preferably disc drags, You don't want to loose a nice brown trout because of a poor or
rough operating drag.
Waders:
Much of the bottom in the upper part is soft. I wouldn't want to wade without waders
even if the water was warm enough.You would be handicapped severely without them.
Wading Boots:
Felt soles would be our choice. The new rubber soles may work well. We haven't tried
them there yet.
Wading Staff:
The water is not really bad enough for us to say a wading staff should be used. We
would call it optional.
Trout Flies:
We recommend "Perfect Flies" for fly fishing Barren Fork Creek. They are not only the
most realistic flies you can buy, they are the most effective ones you can use. We have
imitations of everything trout feed on in this stream. Our realistic flies work much better
than the standard, generic ones on spring creeks. Our flies have been tested on Barren
Fork Creek's wild trout and proven to be effective.
