Fly Fishing The Big Green River
The Big Green River is a spring fed river that located in
the Driftless area of Wisconsin. It flows through open
pastures, meadows and some woods. It is one of the
better spring creek in the Driftless area of Wisconsin.
Fly fishing the Big Green River can be a little
challenging like a good trout stream should be, but
those that meet that challenge are rewarded with some
beautiful, wild, brown trout.
This stream has had a lot of habit improvement work
done on it. Eleven miles of it is managed as a wild brown
trout fishery. It consist mostly of pools and riffles. It
probably only averages about 15 feet in width but there
are a few 25 foot wide areas in the lower section of the
Big Green River.

There's a special regulation area that runs from Highway
#133 upstream to Highway T. It is strictly
"catch-and-release" regulations and only artificial flies
and lures can be used.
Access is plentiful. The stream flows along Highway K
from near Fennimore to the Wisconsin River. The
WDNR acquired about eight miles of easements along
the stream to protect the stream and to provide access.
This is a well managed stream and the results of the
good work of many really shows.
My wife Angie and I have only fished this gem of a trout
stream once. We will be going back. We only had a half
day to spend and we caught five nice brown trout. This
included having to move video camera and tripods and
only one of us fishing at a time.

Water levels can get a little low and some areas a little
warm but fishing is generally good all summer, especially
near the springs.
Fall is probably the best time to fish the river. Brown
