Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for the Big Snowbird River
North Carolina
The trout are mostly brook trout that average about six to eight inches long. Of course some
are larger and maybe up too and even over 12 inches. There are also a few rainbow trout
and brown trout in the lower end of the stream.

Fly Line:
You will probably enjoy using a light fly line to catch the brook trout. Certainly you will be
using mostly small and most likely, dry flies for the brook trout. We would say the ideal fly
line size would be a 4 weight, floating fly line.  If you fish heavy nymphs and small streamers,
you may prefer a 5 weight fly line to deliver the larger flies. A 6 weight line would be best for
fishing larger size streamers and large nymphs.

Fly Rod:
Depending on which fly line sizes you prefer, then you would want a fly rod for each line size
you chose. The four, five and six weight fly rods should be nine feet in length with a medium
fast to fast action.

Fly Reel:
The reels for the four, five and six weight fly rods should be as light as possible and have
decent drags.

You should probably be using at least a 7 and one half foot leader. Most of the time you
would probably want to use a 9 foot leader. I would suggest having them in sizes ranging
from 1X for streamers, up to 6X for small dry fly imitations in both the 7and one half and nine
foot lengths.

Make sure you have plenty of extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 1X to 6X.

Waders would be necessary for the Big Snowbird Creek unless it is warm enough for you to
wet wade. We recommend the breathable type.

Wading Boots:
Most of the bottom is rock. You would not want cleats. Felt soles are the best. We haven't
tried the new rubber soles on this stream yet, but we would think they would work just fine.
There is little algae in the stream.

Landing Net:
A landing net would be a purely optional item.

Trout Flies:
As always, we recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. They're not only the most realistic
flies you can purchase, they're the most effective trout flies you can purchase. If you haven't
already done so, please give them a try.
