Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for Big Springs Creek
Pennsylvania
This stream has some huge trout in it, so you don't want to fish with too light of a fly rod and
tippet. It is not unusual to see trout caught over twenty inches and even larger.
Fly Line:
We suggest either a 4 or 5 weight fly line for most of the fly-fishing. Most all of your fishing is
done using small flies or imitations of scuds and cressbugs. You may want to use a 6 weight
line for streamers.
Fly Rod:
You would want a fly rod to handle each of the above line sizes. The four, five and six weight
rods should be nine feet in length. A moderately fast to fast action would be best in our
opinion.
Fly Reel:
The reels for the four, five or six weight rod should have good drags. You don't want to hang
a large trout and loose it because of a poor drag. It should be smooth and adjust to fine
increments.
Leaders:
You should probably be using at least a 7 1/2 foot leader anywhere you fish on Big Springs
Creek. There are plenty of situation where you would want to go up to 12 feet. You should
have them in sizes ranging from 0X for streamers, up to 6X for small dry flies.
Tippet:
Carry extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Waders:
Although you should do as little wading as possible, I would suggest waders.
Wading Boots:
Felt soles would be our choice.
Flies:

realistic and very effective on this stream. We have imitations of all the aquatic insects and
