Fly Fishing the Blue River Arizona
The Blue River is a 51 mile-long river that runs through
the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. Part of the river
goes through New Mexico. Parts of it provide some very
good fly fishing opportunities.
The Blue River starts at the confluence of Campbell Blue
Creek and Dry Blue Creek just inside the New Mexico
state line. Part of the river runs through the White
Mountains. It enters the San Fransisco River near Clifton.
Fly fishing the Blue River is mostly done by local anglers.
Much of the river is posted. Access is provided along the
Forest Service Road #281 locally called the Blue River
Road. It is accessible from the several crossing between
Alpine and Pigeon Creek.
The Blue River can get quite warm in the hot summer. Its
flows depend a lot on the snowpack. Blue River canyon
provides excellent views of eastern Arizona beauty but
only melting snow provides the Blue River with its water
Fly fishing the Blue River can be hot or cold, depending
on the year, the weather and the location. It hasn't been
stocked for some time and the trout you catch will be wild.
One advantage is that the river doesn't receive much
pressure from anglers.
The Blue River can also be fished in New Mexico. Of
course, it would require a different license.
Although generic or attractor flies work fairly well most of
the time, more specific imitations of the most plentiful and
available trout foods usually outperform the standard
trout flies. We hope you will try Perfect Flies the next time
you fish this stream. You won't be disapointed.
The best time for fly fishing the Blue River in Arizona is
from May to July.
March and April is runoff time
Summer is a good time to fish the river but late summer
may have low, warm water levels.
Fall fishing can be great but the water levels may be low
in the early part of Fall.
