Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for Cataloochee Creek (GSMNP)
North Carolina
There are some large brown trout in Cataloochee Creek, even in the smaller sections of the
stream in a few places. I mention that so that you can keep in mind that if you hook a twenty
inch plus trout, and you are using a very light setup, or a fly reel with a poor drag, you may
regret it.
Fly Line:
We recommend a 4 or 5 weight, floating fly line for your dry fly fishing. You could get by
using a 5 weight floating fly line for just about all your fly fishing. Most anglers want a heavier
fly line for heavy nymphs and streamers. We prefer a 6 weight fly line for that.
Fly Rod:
We suggest a 4, 5 and 6 weight fly rod nine feet in length, in a medium fast to fast action.
Fly Reel:
The reels for the rods should be light and have smooth, decent drags. They should adjust in
fine increments.
Leaders:
We recommend at least a 7 and half foot leader anywhere you fish the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park. You may prefer an even shorter leader for streamers. There are
situations where you would want to go up to 9 feet. I would suggest having them in sizes
ranging from 1X for streamers, up to 6X for small dry flies and midges, in both the 7 and half
and 9 foot lengths.
Tippet:
You should carry extra tippet in sizes ranging from 1X to 6X.
Waders:
Waders are necessary for Cataloochee Creek unless the water is warm enough for you to
wet wade. We prefer breathable waders.
Wading Boots:
Much of the bottom in either gravel, sand or rock. You do not want cleats. Felt soles are the
best. We are testing the new rubber soles out but do not have any comments about them at
the time.
Trout Flies:
We recommend our "Perfect Flies". They are not only the most realistic flies you can
purchase, they are the most effective. They have been tested in the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park more than anywhere else. You should have flies for the insects our hatch
charts call for during the time you are fishing. If you haven't already done so, we ask you to
give them a try. We are confident that you will be glad you did.
