Rio Chama River New Mexico Fly Fishing Guide - Gear, Tackle and
Flies
Fly Line:
We recommend either a 5 or 6 weight fly line for the Rio Chama River, El Vado Tailwater in
New Mexico. You need floating and various weight sinking tip lines.
Fly Rod:
We recommend either a 5 or 6 weight fly rod for each line size you choose to use. The 5 and
6 weight fly rods should in a medium to med-fast action and a 9 foot length.
Fly Reel:
The fly reel used should be for each of the 5 and 6 weight lines you use and each have a
very good drag. We prefer disc drags but there are other types that will work as well. It
should be smooth.
Leaders:
Leaders should size 0X to 6X and be from 9 to 12 feet long. Use shorter leaders for
streamers.
Tippet:
You should have spare tippet in 0X and 6X.
Waders:
Waders are preferred for fly fishing the Rio Chama River. We prefer the breathable type.
Wading Boots:
Wading boots will be needed. Felt soles work best but you may want to consider the new
rubber soles.
Landing Net:
A landing net would be preferred by most anglers but not absolutely necessary.
Trout Flies:
Perfect Flies are recommend because they are the best trout flies you can purchase. We
have specific imitations of every food that exist in the Rio Chama River. If you haven't
already tried Perfect Flies, we certainly hope you will give them a try. You will find they are
very effective on the wild brown trout in this stream. Our large crayfish streamers and sculpin
streamers are very effective on large browns.
