Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Flies for the Clyde River Vermont
Fly Line:
We recommend either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly line for the trout in the Clyde River. You mostly
only need floating lines. You will want a sinking line and/or sinking tip lines for streamer
fishing. Line sizes for landlocked Atlantic salmon should range from 6 to 8 weight
Fly Rod:
We recommend either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod for each line size you choose to use for trout.
The fly rods should in a med-fast to fast action and a 9 foot length. For salmon, a 6 to 8
weight fly rod in a medium fast to fast action and nine foot length.
Fly Reel:
The fly reels used should be for each of the different lines you use and each should have a
very good drag. We prefer disc drags but there are other types that will work as well. It should
be smooth.
Leaders:
Leaders for trout should size 0X to 6X and be from 71/2 to 12 feet long. You may want some
short leaders of 3 or 4 feet for streamers. Leaders for salmon should be 9 feet for single
handed rods up to 16 feet for Spey rods. They should range from 0 to 2X in size.
Tippet:
You should have spare tippet in 0X and 6X for trout and salmon.
Waders:
Waders are preferred for fly fishing the Rapid River. We prefer the breathable type.
Wading Boots:
Wading boots will be needed. Felt soles work best but you may want to consider the new
rubber soles.
Landing Net:
A landing net would be preferred by most anglers but not absolutely necessary.
Flies:
Perfect Flies are recommend because they are the best trout flies you can purchase. We
have specific imitations of every food that exist in the Clyde River. If you haven't already tried
Perfect Flies, we certainly hope you will give them a try. You will find they are very effective
on the large brook trout and landlocked Atlantic Salmon.
