Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - Cowlitz River Washington
Fly Line:
We recommend either a 5 or 6 weight floating fly line for cutthroat trout fishing. You may
want a sinking tip line for streamers and as well as a sinking line.. You may want a heavier
line for steelhead. Many prefer a 7 weight fly line when fly fishing the Cowlitz River.
Fly Rod:
We recommend either a 5 weight fly rod in a medium to medium-fast action that is 9 feet in
length. The 6 weight fly rod should be a medium fast to fast action rod with a slightly stiffer
tip for nymph fishing and 9 feet in length. Steelhead anglers may want to use a spey rod. We
recommend a 7 weight, 12 to 14 foot spey rod.
Fly Reel:
The fly reel used for the 5 or 6 weight lines should have very good drags. We prefer disc
drags but there are other types that will work as well. The fly reel for the spey rod should be
a 7 weight. We prefer large arbor spools for all the reels for this river.
Leaders:
Leaders should be a size 0X to 7X and range from 8 to 15 feet in length. Long leaders are
often required. You should use a 8 to 10 pound test leader for the steelhead.
Tippet:
You should have spare tippet in 0X to 7X. Some anglers prefer fluorocarbon for nymphs but
mono is fine. Extra tippet material is needed for the steelhead or 8 or 10 pound test.
Waders:
Waders are needed for fly fishing the Cowlitz River, even if you are fishing from a drift boat.
We prefer the breathable type. You may want to use neoprene waders during the winter.
Wading Boots:
Wading boots should either by felt soles or the new rubber soles if you prefer them.
Landing Net:
A landing net is strictly optional but we do recommend using one. You may hook a large
salmon and really regret not having one. Make sure you use a large net for the steelhead.
Trout Flies:
Perfect Flies have proven to be effective on the Cowlitz River. We have many customers
who have used them for the sea-run cutthroat and steelhead trout. They closely imitate all
the real aquatic insects, crustaceans in the stream. If you haven't already tried them, we
certainly hope you will. We are confident you will find them highly effective.
