Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for the Cumberland
River Kentucky
The Cumberland River is a big river. Most of its trout are big. It's no place for very
light tackle.

Fly Line:
For the brown and rainbow trout we suggest a 5 weight fly line. It would deliver most
flies that are ideal for most of the fly fishing. If you fish streamers and larger nymphs,
then you should use a 6 weight, floating fly line. You may want to use a sinking tip
line for some streamer fishing.

Fly Rod:
For the five weight line, we would recommend a 5 weight, nine foot, medium fast to
fast action fly rod. The rod for the 6 weight line should be nine foot long in a medium
fast to fast action.

Fly Reel:
The reel for the 5 and 6 weight rods should have a good drag. It should be smooth
and adjust to fine increments. You don't want to loose a big rainbow or brown trout
because of an inadequate drag.

You should probably use at least a 9 foot leader anywhere you fish the Cumberland
River tailwater. We suggest you have them in sizes ranging from a 0X for streamers,
up to 6X for small midges.

You should have extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.

I would not fish the Cumberland River anywhere without waders. We prefer
breathable waders.

Wading Boots:
Felt soles would be our choice for wading boots. The new rubber soles may work well
in the river but we haven't tried them there yet.

Wading Staff:
A wading staff would be optional. It certainly doesn't hurt to have one and we
recommend it be used. This is a tailwater subject to sudden dam discharges.

We recommend "Perfect Fly" Trout Flies. We have specific imitations of every
important insect that exit in the Cumberland River including the Black Flies. Our flies
are the most realistic imitations you can buy as well as the most effective imitations
you can buy. If you haven't done so already, we hope you will give them a try.
