Fly Fishing Gear for the Eagle River Colorado
Fly Line:
We recommend a 4 weight, floating or lighter fly line for the small cutthroat and brook trout
found in the meadow areas of the headwaters of the Eagle River. We recommend a 5
weight, floating fly line for dry flies and small nymphs for the major part of the river. Many
anglers may prefer a 6 weight floating fly line for heavier nymphs and streamers. You may
also want a sinking tip line for streamers in the 6 weight line.
Leaders:
Leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for midges and small dry
flies. Lengths ranging from seven and one-half feet up to 12 feet are suggested.
Tippets:
We suggest that you have extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Fly Rods:
We think the fly rods should have a moderately fast to fast action and be nine feet in
length.
Fly Reels:
The fly reels for the 4, 5 and 6 weight fly lines should be light and have a good smooth
drags. We think disc drags are the best.
Waders:
There are a few areas you will be able to fish without waders but you will need them most
everywhere.
Wading Boots:
We recommend felt soles for your wading boots.
Wading Staff:
A wading staff would be purely optional.
Landing Net:
A landing net is another optional item.
Trout Flies:
As always we recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. If you haven't already done so, please
