Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for the East River, Colorado

Fly Line:
We recommending a 4 weight, floating fly line or an even lighter fly line for the small brook
and cutthroat trout in the uppermost section of the river. We recommend a 5 weight,
floating fly line for dry flies and lighter nymphs for the rainbow and brown trout in the
middle and lower sections of the river. A 6 weight fly floating fly line is recommended for
heavier nymphs and streamers.

Leaders:
Leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for midges and small dry
flies. Lengths ranging from seven and one-half feet (for the fast pocket water) up to twelve
feet in length are suggested.

Tippets:
Extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X should be available for the leaders we list
above.

Fly Rods:
We suggest a fly rod for each of the line sizes you choose to use. In our opinion, the rods
should have a moderately fast to fast action and be nine feet in length.

Fly Reels:
The fly reels should be as light as possible and have good drags. You don't want to loose
a nice trout because of a poor or rough operating drag.

Waders:
We recommend waders. There are not many areas you will be able to fish without them.

Wading Boots:
We recommend felt soles for your wading boots.

Wading Staff:
A wading staff would be purely optional. You may want to consider using one during high
water or in stronger currents that are suitable for wading.

Landing Net:
A landing net is another optional item. You don't have to use one, but you may regret not
having one if you end up losing a nice trout.

Trout Flies:
As always we recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. The flies you have for the aquatic  
insects should vary depending on the time of the year you are fishing. We suggest you call
