Gear and Trout Flies for the Esopus River New York
For the most part, the trout average about ten to twelve inches. The brook trout are much
smaller, of course, but they are found mostly in the tributary streams. Larger brown and
rainbow trout migrate out of the lake up into the river to spawn. They can run rather large and
require heavier tackle than the normal trout found in the river. Also, the trout in the upper
section above the cold water discharge average on the small side as compared to the trout in
the lower section. If you are only fishing one or the other of these sections, it could have an
effect on the gear you use. We will not include the brook trout in the gear recommended
below because they are not often caught, or specifically pursued, in the main river.

Fly Line:
A 5 weight fly line would deliver most flies that are ideal for most of the fly fishing in the
Esopus. However, much of the fishing should be done with nymphs and streamers and a 6
weight line would be a better all around choice for that. If your only fishing for small trout in
the tributary streams, a four weight fly line would be fine.

Leaders:
Even though the river stays a little cloudy, it can be very clear in certain sections. You should
probably be using at least a 7 1/2 foot leader in those areas. You should have leaders in
sizes ranging from 0X for streamers, up to 6X for small dry flies and midge larvae and pupae
flies.

Tippet:
Carry extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.

Fly Rod:
The fly rods should be nine feet in length in our opinion. A moderately fast to fast action
would be best in our opinion.

Fly Reel:
The reels for the four, five and six weight fly lines should have good drags. If you fish during
thetime the fish move out of the lake into the stream to spawn, this could be important
because the browns and rainbows run larger. They should be smooth and adjust to fine
increments.

Waders:
Waders are necessary to fish the Esopus. You would be severely handicapped without them.

Wading Boots:
Much of the bottom is either mud or silt in some sections, yet others have small gravel and
even solid rock. Felt soles would be our choice.

Wading Staff:
The water can be rough to wade. We would suggest a wading staff for extra safety and help
in getting around in strong current.

Trout Flies:
We recommend "Perfect Flies" because they are the best trout flies you can purchase. They
have specific imitations of every aquatic insect in the Esopus Creek and in all stages of life
that are applicable. There is also a great selection of simi-realistic terrestrial and
crustaceans. We have several customers who regularly fish this stream who use nothing else.
We certainly hope you will give them a try.
