Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Flies for Grand Lake Stream Maine
Fly Line:
We recommend either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly line for the trout in Penobscot River. You
mostly only need floating lines. You will want a sinking line and/or sinking tip lines for
streamer fishing. Line sizes for landlocked Atlantic salmon should range from 6 to 8 weight
Fly Rod:
We recommend either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod for each line size you choose to use for
trout. The fly rods should in a med-fast to fast action and a 9 foot length. For salmon, a 6
to 8 weight fly rod in a medium fast to fast action and nine foot length.
Fly Reel:
The fly reels used should be for each of the different lines you use and each should have
a very good drag. We prefer disc drags but there are other types that will work as well. It
should be smooth.
Leaders:
Leaders for trout should size 0X to 6X and be from 71/2 to 12 feet long. You may want
some short leaders of 3 or 4 feet for streamers. Leaders for salmon should be 9 feet for
single handed rods up to 16 feet for Spey rods. They should range from 0 to 2X in size.
Tippet:
You should have spare tippet in 0X and 6X for trout and salmon.
Waders:
Waders are preferred although there are places you can fish from the bank. We prefer the
breathable type.
Wading Boots:
Felt bottom wading boots are recommended although the new rubber soled wading boots
may work fine.
Landing Net:
A landing net is purely an optional item but recommended for the salmon.
Trout Flies:
We recommend our own "Perfect Flies" because they are the most realistic and effective
imitations of the things trout eat that you can purchase. We also have our own Perfect Fly
Atlantic Salmon flies and well as many generic salmon flies. If you haven't already tried
them, we certainly hope you will. You will not be disappointed.
