Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for the Green River North
Carolina
Fly Line:
We recommend a 4 or 5 weight fly line for dry fly fishing the Green River. You could get by
using a 5 weight floating fly line for everything. Many anglers that fish heavy nymphs and
streamers would want a 6 weight fly line but it isn't absolutely necessary.
Fly Rod:
We suggest a rod for each the line sizes if you use all three. It should be nine feet in length
and a moderately fast to fast action.
Fly Reel:
The reel for either rod should have a decent drag. It should be smooth. A disc drag that
adjust in fine increments would be best.
Leaders:
You should probably be using at least a 7 and half foot leader anywhere you fish the Green
River. There are situation where you would want to go up to 9 feet. I would suggest having
them in sizes ranging from 1X for streamers, up to 6X for small dry flies and midges, in both
the 7 and half and 9 foot lengths.
Tippet:
You should have extra tippet in sizes ranging from 1X to 7X.
Waders:
Waders are necessary for the Green River unless the water is warm enough for you to wet
wade.
Wading Boots:
Felt soles provide the best traction for this type of stream.. We are testing the new rubber
soles and have no comment about them yet.
Trout Flies:
We always recommend "Perfect Flies", not because they are our own flies but because they
are the most realistic trout flies you can purchase. They are also the most effective at
catching trout. If you haven't already tried them, we certainly hope you will.
