Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for the Gunnison River, Colorado
Fly Line:
The all around best fly line size would be a 5 weight, floating fly line. A 6 weight fly line
would be best for streamers and nymphs. Some anglers may prefer to use a sinking tip
line for the streamers, especially when fishing for the salmon. You would be better off
using a 6 weight line for fishing nymphs and streamers.
Fly Rod:
You would want a fly rod to handle both the above line sizes. The 5 and 6 weight rods
should be nine feet in length. We recommend a medium fast to fast action the rods.
Fly Reel:
The reels for both the 5 or 6 weight lines should have good drags. They should be smooth
and adjust to fine increments.
Leaders:
We recommend at least a seven foot leader anywhere on the Gunnison River. Shorter
lengths work best for the fast pocket water sections. A nine foot length would probably be
the best all around length. There are situations where you may want a 12 foot leader. You
may want a shorter leader for streamers. You should have leaders ranging in sizes
ranging from 0X for streamers, up to 6X for small flies.
Tippet:
You should have extra tippet ranging from 0X to 6X.
Waders:
Waders are necessary just about anywhere you fish the Gunnison River. We prefer the
breathable type but you may need neoprene waders if you are fishing during the winter.
Wading Boots:
Felt soles would be our choice.
Wading Staff:
The use of a wading staff is optional. The water can be tough to wade in some sections
and with some releases of water from the dam. .
Landing Net:
If you don't use one, you will probably wish you did.
Trout Flies:
We recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies because they are the most realistic and
effective flies you can purchase. We have specific imitations of every important insect that
exist on the Gunnison River. If you haven't already done so, please give them a try. You
want be disappointed.
