Jemez River New Mexico - Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies
We recommend either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly line for the Jemez River in New Mexico. You only
need floating lines.
You would want a fly rod to handle each of the above line sizes. The 4, 5 and 6 weight fly
rods should be nine feet long. We would prefer a medium fast to fast action.
The reels for the 4, 5 or 6 weight lines should have good drags. They should be smooth and
adjust to fine increments.
You should be using at least a seven foot leader. A nine foot length would probably be the
best all around length. There are situations where 12 foot leaders may be needed. The only
exception would be when you are fishing streamers. You may want a shorter leader in that
case. You should have leaders in sizes ranging from 0X for streamers, up to 6X for small
flies like small BWOs and midges.
Carry extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Waders are necessary just about anywhere you fish the river. There are areas you could
fish from the banks, but you would be at a disadvantage many places. We prefer the
breathable type but you may need neoprene waders if you are fishing cold water.
Felt soles would be our choice.
The use of a wading staff would be a purely optional accessory.
You certainly would want to consider.
Perfect Flies are recommend because they are the best trout flies you can purchase. We
have specific imitations of every trout food that exist in the Jemez River. The wild brown trout
in this river can be very selective. Matching the natural nymphs and larvae as well as
matching the hatch is usually necessary. If you haven't already tried Perfect Flies, we
certainly hope you will give them a try. You will find they are very effective on the wild brown
trout in this stream.
