Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for the Little Blackfoot River Montana
Fly Line:
The best all around fly line for the Little Blackfoot River would probably be a 5 weight, floating
line. For the smaller cutthroat and brook trout in the headwaters, we recommend a 4 weight, or
even lighter if you prefer, floating fly line. For nymphs and streamers, a 6 weight, floating fly line
would be better than the 5 weight. You may also want to use a sinking tip line in the 6 weight for
the streamers.
Fly Rod:
You would want a fly rod to handle each of the above line sizes. The four, five and six weight fly
rods should have a medium fast to fast action and be nine feet in length.
Fly Reel:
The reels for the 4, 5 and 6 weight lines should be light weight and should have good drags. The
drags should be smooth and adjust to fine increments.
Leaders:
You should be using at least a seven foot leader anywhere on the Little Blackfoot River. A 9 foot
length would probably be the best all around length. The only exception would be when you are
fishing streamers. There could be circumstances where you may want to use a 12 foot leader,
such as during the Trico hatch. If you fish streamers, you may want a short leader. Make sure
you have leaders in sizes ranging from 0X for streamers, up to 6X for midges and other small
flies.
Tippet:
You should also have plenty of extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Waders:
Waders are necessary just about anywhere you fish the Little Blackfoot River. There are some
areas you could fish from the bank. We prefer the breathable type but you may need neoprene
waders if you are fishing during the winter.
Wading Boots:
Felt soles would be our choice. The new rubber soles may work well. They have at other similar
waters where we've tried them.
Landing Net:
A landing net is optional for the Little Blackfoot River, however, we would certainly recommend
one. There are some nice size brown trout in this river.
Trout Flies:
