Fly Fishing Guide for the Little Truckee River in California - Gear,
Tackle and Flies
The Little Truckee River is a diverse river consisting of a freestone section and tailwater
sections. It has several tributaries, one of which is a spring creek. The gear and tackle you
need varies with the area and the species you are pursuing.

We recommend either a 4, 5 or 6 weight floating fly line for fly fishing the Little Truckee
River. The 6 weight line is recommended for nymph and streamers. There could be
situations where you need a sinking tip or sinking fly line.

Fly Rod:
The 4, 5 and 6 weight fly rods should be 9 feet in length with a medium fast to fast action.

Fly Reel:
The fly reels used should be for either the 4, 5 or 6 weight lines should have good drags.
We prefer disc drags but there are other types that will work as well.

Leaders should be a size 0X to 6X and range from 7 1/2 to 12 feet in length. Most leaders
should be 4X, 5X or 6X in a 9 foot length.

You should have spare tippet in 0X to 6X.

Waders are necessary. We recommend the breathable type. If you fish during the cold
season, you may want to use neoprene waders.

Wading Boots:
Wading boots are best if they are felt but regulations may change on this.

Landing Net:
A landing net is strictly optional but we do recommend using one.

Trout Flies:
Perfect Flies would be your best possible choice for the Little Truckee River. It has a very
diverse population of mayflies, caddisflies and stoneflies. Perfect Flies closely imitate all the
real aquatic insects, crustaceans and terrestrials that are found on and in the stream. We
have specific imitations of all the insects in all stages of life. If you haven't already tried them,
we hope you will. Give us a call or email and we can help you make your selections.
