Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for Mossy Creek Virginia
Fly Line:
We are recommending a 4 or 5 weight, floating fly line for all of the fishing for Mossy Creek.
There are some anglers that prefer a 6 weight fly floating fly line for heavier nymphs and
streamers. You could easily get by with a 5 weight most of the time.
Leaders:
Leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for midges and small dry
flies. Lengths ranging from nine feet up to twelve feet in length are suggested.
Tippets:
Extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X should be available for the leaders we list above.
Fly Rods:
We suggest either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod for each line size you choose to fish. It should
have a medium fast to fast action and be nine feet in length.
Fly Reels:
The fly reel you use for the 4, 5 or 6 weight line should be light and have good drags,
preferably disc drags,
Waders:
You may prefer to wear waders on Mossy Creek but it is against the regulations to wade the
stream. If you wear them, we recommend breathable ones.
Wading Boots:
Felt soles or rubber sole boots would work. We prefer felt.
Wading Staff:
Not needed
Trout Flies:
We recommend our "Perfect Flies". We think they are the best trout flies you can purchase.
If you haven't already tried them, we certainly hope you will. You want be disappointed. Our
imitations of all the aquatic insects in Mossy Creek are far superior to any available on the
commercial fly market. The trout in this stream can be very selective and we have just what
you need to fool them.
