Fly Fishing Gear for the North Branch of the Salmon River New York
Fly Line:
We suggest either a 4 or 5 weight, floating fly line for all of the fly-fishing. The four weight line
should be fine for the nymphs and smaller streamers you use. You could even get by with less
if your prefer to go at it the light tackle way.

Fly Rod:
The fly rod should be nine feet in length. A moderately fast to fast action would be our choice.

Fly Reel:
The reel for either of these two size rods isn't all that important as long as it holds your line.
Even the cheap clicker reels work fine.

You should use at least a seven and one-half foot leader anywhere and anytime. A twelve foot
length and even longer may be the right choice in some situations. You should have them in
sizes ranging from 2X for small streamers, up to 6X for small dry flies.

Carry extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 4X to 7X.

You should not wade unless it is necessary to get the fly to places the trout may be feeding or
hiding. However, you do suggest you wear them and in some cases, you will find it necessary
to get in the water to make a presentation in the preferred lies or individual fish you have

Wading Boots:
Felt soles would be our first choice. The new rubber soles may also work well.

We always recommend "Perfect Fly" Trout Flies.  We have specific imitations as well as all the
popular attractor or generic trout flies. We offer the generics and attractors at a very low price.
