Fly Fishing North Creek Virginia
North Creek is a small brook trout stream located in the
Glenwood Ranger's District of the Jefferson National
Forest. It has a "catch and release" section with some
good brook trout fishing opportunities. Fly fishing North
Creek will test your bow and arrow casting ability. It is
truly a small stream.
There is also a "put and take" section that runs along
the road from Jennings Creek to the tailhead, but don't
let the sight of it discourage you. Once you reach the
trailhead, things change. The trail parallels the creek on
its way to Apple Orchard Falls but is usually a good
distance away from it..
There are problems that arise on North Creek during
low water conditions. It may appear to go dry in places
at times but the further you travel upstream, the more
you will notice the stream reappears and maintains
enough water to keep a decent population of wild brook
trout. Springs also help maintain the coolness of the
water during the warmer months of the year, not to
mention the higher pH of the water that accounts for
plenty of food for the trout.
North Creek is a very small, tightly enclosed brook trout
stream that isn't easy to access in places. It isn't easy to
cast or move upstream in many areas. You have to do
some work to reach the deeper pools in places. I'm sure
the stream looks entirely different depending on the
time of year you fish it and the amount of recent rainfall
in the drainage area.
Springtime brings about several aquatic insect
hatches.. There are Little Brown and Little Yellow
stoneflies; Quill Gordon, Blue Quill, and Light Cahill
mayflies; along with Green Sedges, Cinnamon Caddis
and Great Autumn Brown Caddisflies. During the
summer months imitations of terrestrial insects produce
well, especially ant and beetle patterns.
The season runs year-round
Trout can be caught on nice, warm winter days.
Springtime is the best time for fly fishing North Creek
because of the aquatic insect hatches and good water
Summertime is okay but the water can get low during
the late summer.
If water levels are not too low, Fall would be a great time
for fly fishing North Creek..
