Fly Fishing Oil Creek Pennsylvania
Oil Creek begins at Canadohita Lake in Northwestern
Pennsylvania. The stream is approximately thirty miles in
length and has a good population of trout. It's a tributary
of the Allegheny River. If you happen to be in
Northwestern Pennsylvania, fly fishing Oil Creek is a
very worthwhile adventure. The stream gets as large as
a hundred feet wide.
The stream flows through the beautiful Oil Creek State
Park. There's two Delayed Harvest Areas located on the
stream. The first DH runs from near Drake Well Museum
downstream to the Oil Creek State Park hiking trail
bridge and is one mile in length. Pine Creek, a tributary
stream, enters Oil Creek just above this area.
The other DH area is 1.6 miles long and runs from the
bridge at Petroleum Center downstream to a railroad
bridge at Columbia Farm. It's about two miles north of
the town of Rouseville. The two DH areas are the most
popular fly fishing areas but not necessarily the best.
The uppermost section of Oil Creek is fairly small. Most
anglers prefer to fish the water downstream of
Tryonville. Access is provided by roads leading off State
Routes #8 and #208. Pine Creek enters near the town
The prime area of Oil Creek is considered to be below
Pine Creek downstream to the Allegheny River. Fly
fishing Oil Creek in this area ranges from easy to difficult
depending on whether your catching the larger holdover
trout or recently stocked trout. This section includes
both Delayed Harvest Sections and Oil Creek State
Park. The stream is larger and more like the picture
perfect trout stream with a pool, run and riffle
configuration. Holdover and stocked trout are plentiful
and so are the aquatic insect hatches.
This section can be accessed off State Route #8. There
are several bridge access areas in this section. You will
have to hike a short ways to parts of the creek in this
sectuib but access is still very easy.
The season is the standard Pennsylvania trout season
except for the DH Sections which are open year-round..
Springtime is a good time for fly fishing Oil Creek due to
the plentiful hatches.
Fly fishing usually slows down during the Summer in the
uppermost sections. The water gets too warm..
Fall is the best time to catch a larger brown trout. They
spawn in the Fall. .
