Rio Grande River Colorado Fly Fishing Guide - Gear, Tackle and
Trout Flies

Fly Line:
We recommend either a  4, 5 or 6 floating weight floating fly line for the Rio Grande River in

Fly Rod:
We recommend either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod for the line size line you choose to use. The
fly rods should be a medium-fast to fast action and 9 foot in length.

Fly Reel:
The fly reel used should be for each of the 4,5 and 6 weight lines should have very good
drags. We prefer disc drags but there are other types that will work as well. It should be

Leaders should size 0X to 6X and be from 71/2 feet to 12 feet long.

You should have spare tippet in 0X and 6X.

Waders are preferred for fly fishing the Rio Grande River. We prefer the breathable type.
You may prefer neoprene waders for winter fishing.

Wading Boots:
Wading boots will be needed. Felt soles work best but you may want to consider the new
rubber soles. The bottom is slick.

Landing Net:
A landing net would be preferred by most anglers but not absolutely necessary.

Trout Flies:
