Fly Fishing The Salmon River Oregon
The Salmon River is a 34 mile long river that begins in
Oregon's Cascade Range and drains a portion of Mount
Hood. It's a tributary of the Sandy River. The river is
within an hours drive from the city of Portland, Oregon.
The entire Salmon River is a protected National Wild and
Scenic River. It is the only river that is protected
throughout its entire length in the U. S. Several sections
of the river are in protected wilderness. Fly fishing the
Salmon River may not always be productive, but it is
always a beautiful place to cast a fly.
The lower portion of the Salmon River provides prefect
habitat for anadromous fish spawning and rearing. The
Salmon River host summer steelhead, winter steelhead,
coho salmon, spring Chinook Salmon and native
cutthroat trout. Cutthroat trout and rainbow trout are also
stocked in the river.
The Salmon River is probably best known for its run of
hatchery fall chinook salmon. Cutthroat trout fishing is
good for resident fish. Sea-run cutthroat trout are found
in the late Summer months in the tidewater in the lower
section of river
Access to the lower part of the Salmon River is good. It's
paralleled by Hwy #18 for a large portion of its length.
Highway #101 crosses the river near its mouth. There's
a boat ramp at the end of Three Rocks Road.
