Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for New York's Schoharie Creek

Fly Line:
You would probably want a 4 or 5 weight floating fly line for your dry fly fishing. You could get
by using a 5 weight floating fly line for everything. Many anglers that fish heavy nymphs and
streamers would want a 6 weight fly line but it would not be absolutely necessary.

Fly Rod:
We recommend a medium fast to fast action fly rod for the 4, 5 or 6 weight fly line. It should be
nine feet in length in our opinion.

Fly Reel:
The reel for the four, five or six weight rod should have a decent drag. It should be smooth. A
disc drag that adjust in fine increments would be best. Schoharie Creek has some nice size
brown trout and you don't want to end up breaking your tippet because you used a reel with a
low quality drag.

Leaders:
You should probably be using at least a seven and a half foot leader anywhere you fish
Schoharie Creek. I would suggest having them in sizes ranging from 0X for streamers, up to 6X
for small dry flies and midges. Shorter leaders should be used for streamers.

Tippet:
You should have extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.

Waders:
Waders are necessary for fishing Schoharie Creek.  

Wading Boots:
Much of the bottom in either gravel, sand or rock. You would not want cleats. Felt soles are the
best.

Trout Flies:
