Fly Fishing Second Creek West Virginia
Second Creek is a large spring-fed creek that's a tributary
of the Greenbriar River. This is a stocked stream known
for its large brown trout. Unlike most spring creeks, this
one has a gravel bottom rather than a silt and sand
bottom common to most of Pennsylvania's spring creeks.
Second Creek has a mile and a half of "fly-fishing only"
water with public access. The access is on private
property, so please be especially careful not to leave any
trash or otherwise damage the property. Fly fishing
Second Creek is best in this special regulated section.
The creek has a good population of aquatic insects,
thanks to it high pH. Mayflies, caddisflies and midges are
present. There are also plenty of scuds. It's relatively
shallow water with a few deeper sections in the pools.
To access Second Creek, from Ronceverte, head south
on State Route #219 to County Road 65. Turning left on
County Road #62 will take you to what is called the
low-water bridge. This is the beginning (upstream) of the
special regulations area.
The creek averages about twenty to thirty feet wide and in
shallow in most places, especially during the summer
months. There are some deep pools. We should mention
that this is a popular fishing place for locals. It is heavily
stocked, so don't expect to be fishing by yourself.
