Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - Shoshone River
Fly Line:
Most anglers would prefer a 5 weight fly line and some even a 6 weight line for
nymphing. There is nothing wrong with using a 4 weight fly line if you want to go on the
lighter side.
Leaders:
Your leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for small streamers up to a 6X for small
dry flies. You should carry them in lengths ranging from seven and one-half feet, up to
12 feet in length.
Tippets:
You should have extra tippet material ranging from 3X to 6X.
Fly Rods:
We recommend a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod nine feet in length. Most anglers would prefer
a four piece rod so that it will break down into a short length for hiking.
Fly Reels:
The fly reel you use for the 4, 5 or 6 weight lines should be light but that is about the
only requirement.
Waders:
You can get by with out waders if you fish from the banks but it wouldn't be the most
desirable situation. We recommend carrying waders.
Wading Boots:
We recommend felt soles for your wading boots. You may want to consider the new
rubber sole boots.
Wading Staff:
A wading staff would be purely optional. You should consider using one during high
water or in stronger currents that are suitable for wading.
Landing Net:
A landing net is another optional item but we do recommend using one.
Trout Flies:
We recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. If you haven't already done so, you should give
"Perfect Flies" a try. They are the most realistic and effective trout flies you can
purchase. They have proven successful on the Shoshone River wild brown trout as well
as its other species.
