Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for the Snake River Wyoming
Fly Line:
The Snake River has some big cutthroat trout, up to 18 inches. The ideal fly line size
would probably be a 5 weight, floating fly line. You could get by with just this one fly line
size. Some anglers would prefer something heavier for large nymphs and streamers. A 6
weight fly line would deliver most of the streamers and heavy nymphs better than the 5
weight. Many anglers prefer lighter tackle and there's isn't anything wrong with using a 4
weight line even though it wouldn't be our preference.

Fly Rod:
You would want a fly rod to handle all of the above line sizes you chose to use.  The four,
five and six weight rods should be nine feet in length. We feel like the longer rods offer a
huge advantage in the windy conditions you often experience on the Snake River.  We
think a medium fast to fast action would be best these rods.

Fly Reel:
The reels for the 4, 5 and 6 weight lines should have good drags. They should be smooth
and adjust to fine increments. You don't want to hook one of the big Cutthroat trout and
end up with a broken tippet because you had a less than adequate fly reel.

Leader length usually isn't critical on the Snake River. A seven and one-half to nine foot
length would probably be the best all around length. There are situation, especially during
Trico hatches, where 12 feet would be a better length. Make sure you have leaders in
sizes ranging from 0X for streamers, up to a 6X for smaller flies.

You should also have plenty of extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.

Waders are necessary just about anywhere you fish the Snake River. We prefer the
breathable type but you may need neoprene waders if you are fishing in very cold water.

Wading Boots:
Felt soles would be our choice. The new rubber soles may work well. They have at other
similar waters where we've tried them.

Wading Staff:
The use of a wading staff would be an optional accessory.

Landing Net:
You probably shouldn't be fishing the Snake River without a landing net. It is strictly
