Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for the South Holston River
Tennessee
There are some big trout in the South Holston River, so you don't want to go too light with
your tackle.
Fly Line:
You can use fly lines lighter than a 5 weight floating line but that is what we are
recommending for the least size fly line. Most anglers may prefer to use a 6 weight fly line
for fishing large nymphs and streamers, but it would not be absolutely necessary. Sinking
tip lines come in handy at times, so you may want to consider them.
Leaders:
Your leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to 6X for small dry flies like
nymph imitations. You should carry them in lengths ranging from 9 feet up to 12 feet.
There are many situations where a long leader is required. You may want to use shorter
leaders for streamers.
Tippets:
You should have plenty of extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X.
Fly Rods:
We recommend a 5 weight fly rod for almost all of the fishing on the South Fork of the
Holston River. It should be a medium fast to fast action rod nine feet in length.
If you use a 6 weight line for larger nymphs and streamers, you would want a 6 weight fly
rod in a fast action that was nine feet in length.
Fly Reels:
The fly reels you use for the 5 and 6 weight fly lines should have very good drags. They
should be as light as possible and their drags should be adjustable in fine increments. This
is an advantage when you are fishing light tippets.
Waders:
We recommend waders. You wouldn't have many options without them, even if you use a
drift boat. We prefer the breathable type.
Wading Boots:
We recommend felt soles for your wading boots. The bottom of the South Holston is slick.
You may want to consider the new rubber sole boots to prevent the spread of Didymo. This
steam does have the little dreaded creatures.
Landing Net:
We think a landing net is a great idea for anyone wanting to make sure they land one of
the large trout. They are purely optional but recommended.
Trout Flies:
We recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. They are by far the best flies for the South
Holston because they are the most realistic flies you can purchase. We have imitations of
every insect and other trout food that is present in this stream. If you haven't done so
already, we ask you to give them a try. We know you will not be disappointed.
