Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - The Stillwater River
Montana
Fly Line:
We recommend a 4 or 5 weight, floating fly line for most of the fishing on the Stillwater River.
Some anglers may prefer to use a 6 weight fly floating fly line for heavier nymphs and
streamers.
Leaders:
Leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for midges and small dry
flies. Lengths ranging from nine feet up to twelve feet in length are suggested.
Tippets:
Extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X should be available for the leaders we list above.
Fly Rods:
We suggest either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod for each line size you choose to fish. It should
have a medium fast to fast action and be nine feet in length.
Fly Reels:
The fly reel you use for the 4, 5 or 6 weight line should be light and have good drags,
preferably disc drags.
Waders:
You should have waders for fly fishing the Stillwater River. We prefer the breathable type.
Wading Boots:
Felt soles would be our choice. The new rubber soles may work well.
Wading Staff:
A wading staff may be needed under higher water conditions.
Landing Net:
A landing net would be recommended but not necessary.
Flies:
We always recommend "Perfect Fly" Trout Flies. We have specific imitations of every important
insect that hatches on the Stillwater River. Our flies are the most realistic imitations you can
buy as well as the most effective imitations you can obtain.
