Fly Fishing Gear for Straight, Winter, Panther, Indian and Obsidian
Creeks (YNP) Wyoming
Almost all of the trout in these streams are small brook trout rarely exceeding 10 inches.
There are a few small rainbows mixed in with them in some areas.
Fly Line:
We recommend a 3 or 4 weight forward, floating fly line.
Leaders:
You should have leaders ranging from a 71/2 foot to 9 foot tapered leader in sizes from 3X
for small streamers up to a 6X for midges and tiny flies.
Tippet:
Carry tippet ranging in sizes from 3x to 6X.
Fly Rod:
The fly rod should be a 4 or 5 weight rod nine feet long, in a medium fast to fast action.
Fly Reel:
The fly reel should be light and designed to hold the 4 or 5 weight fly line. A clicker drag is
fine for these small fish.
Waders:
Waders are not required but recommended. We prefer the breathable type.
Wading Boots:
Rubber sole wading boots are required by the park.
Trout Flies:
Our "Perfect Flies" are the best ones you could possibly use for these small creeks. We
have flies to match every terrestrial and aquatic insect in all stages of life as well as generic
and attractor flies. If you haven't done so already, please give them a try. You will be glad
you did.
