Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - Swift River New
You will probably enjoy using a light fly line to catch the brook trout from the Swift River. You
will probably be using small and most likely, dry flies for them. We would say the ideal fly line
size would be a 4 weight, floating fly line. If you fish the lower parts of the river, you would
probably want a 5 weight fly line for most of your dry fly fishing. If you fish nymphs and small
streamers, I would say a 6 weight fly line would deliver most of those flies better.
Assuming you would be fishing both the headwaters and the lower section of the river, I
would suggest a rod for each line size. The rods should be nine feet in length and in a fast to
moderately fast action.
The reels for the 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rods should have decent drags. A disc drag is best but
wouldn't necessarily be necessary but I would want it to adjust to fine increments.
You should probably be using at least a 7 and half foot leader anywhere you fish the Swift
River. There's situations where you would want to go up to 9 feet. I would suggest having
them in sizes ranging from 1X for streamers, up to 6X for small dry flies, in both the 7 and a
half and 9 foot lengths.
Don't forget to carry extra tippet in sizes ranging from 1X to 6X.
Waders are necessary for the Swift River. We prefer the breathable type.
We are testing the new rubber soles out and have no comment about them yet.
A landing net is purely an optional item.
We recommend our "Perfect Flies". Thats not only because we sell them, its also because
we think they are the best flies you can purchase. They are not only the most realistic flies
you can buy, they are the most effective ones you can use. If you haven't done so already,
we hope you will give them a try. You will be glad you did. You will find they are a huge benefit
in catching the larger wild and holdover trout in the Swift River.
