Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - Tongue River
Fly Line:
We recommend either a 4, 5 and 6 weight fly lines for the Tongue River in Wyoming.
You only need a floating fly line. If you must hike to its waters, we recommend carrying
only one rod.
Fly Rod:
We recommend either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod for the respective line size you choose
to use. The fly rods should be 9 foot in length and in a fast action.
Fly Reel:
The fly reel used should be for each of the 4, 5 and 6 weight lines you use and each
have a very good drag. We prefer disc drags but there are other types that will work as
well. It should be smooth.
Leaders:
Leaders should size 0X to 6X and be from 7 and a half to 12 feet long. Use shorter
leaders for streamers.
Tippet:
You should have spare tippet in 0X and 6X.
Waders:
Waders are preferred for fly fishing the Tongue River. We prefer the breathable type.
Wading Boots:
Wading boots will be needed. Felt soles work best but you may want to consider the
new rubber soles.
Landing Net:
A landing net would be preferred by most anglers but its not absolutely necessary.
Trout Flies:
We recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. If you haven't already done so, you should give
"Perfect Flies" a chance to perform for you. They are the most realistic and effective
trout flies you can purchase. Our stonefly nymphs and adult imitations of the
Salmonflies, Golden stoneflies and Little Yellow Stoneflies are the very best stonefly
imitations you can buy. They have proven successful on theTongue River and most
other Wyoming streams.
