Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for the Uncompahgre River,
You may could very well get by with only fishing only a 5 weight, floating fly line on this
river. We don't necessarily recommend it but it would work okay. Many anglers would
probably like to use a 4 weight line to deliver their small dry flies. That would work just fine
too. Then there are those who want to fish larger nymphs and streamers and for that they
would probably want to use a 6 weight floating fly line. We doubt most anglers would use
them, but you may also consider a sinking tip line if you are fishing during the winter.
You would want a fly rod to handle each of the above line sizes if you choose to use all
three line sizes. In our opinion, the fly rods should be nine feet in length and have a
moderately fast to fast action.
The reels for the 4, 5 or 6 weight lines should have good drags. They should be smooth
and adjust to fine increments. Normally the disc type of drags work the best but there are
others that are acceptable.
You should be using at least a seven foot leader anywhere on the Uncompahgre River.
Shorter lengths work best for the faster moving pocket water. A nine foot length would
probably be the best all around length although some anglers use a long as a 12 foot
leader. The only exception would be when you are fishing streamers. You may want a
shorter leader in that case. Make sure you have leaders in sizes ranging from 0X for
streamers, up to 6X for small dry flies and midges.
You should also have plenty of extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
As mentioned before, waders are not absolutely necessary, but we do recommend you
use them. There are places you would want to use them. We prefer the breathable type
but you may need neoprene waders if you are fishing during the winter.
Felt soles would be our choice.
The use of a wading staff would be purely optional.
A landing net would also be an optional item. Some anglers don't like using them and there
is nothing wrong with that. If you are concerned about loosing fish, you should use one.
We recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. We have specific imitations of every important
insect that exist on the this River. If you haven't already done so, please give them a try.
