Hatches and Trout Flies for the West Walker River California
The West Walker River has a large diversity of aquatic insects but none of them
are very plentiful. That doesn't mean the trout don't pay attention to what's most
plentiful and available because they do. Probably the most plentiful are the Spotted
Sedges or caddisflies.

Little Yellow Stoneflies hatch from June through August. These are called Yellow
Sallies by most anglers. Golden Stoneflies are fairly plentiful in the river. The
nymphs can be active anywhere from the first of April to May first. The hatch
usually occurs during June.

Blue-winged Olives hatch in March and April. These are bi-brooded and hatch
again in September and October. Like the East Walker river, the Spring hatch is off
and on and not very reliable, but if it occurs while you are there fishing, you would
want to be able to imitate the insects.

Pale Morning duns can be found from the end of May through September. They
are fairly plentiful and represent the best mayfly hatches.

Caddisflies hatch from April all the way to October, depending on the particular
species. In addition to the Spotted Sedges, there are others that hatch from the
end of May through September. There's some Short-horned Sedges and Green
Sedges that hatch in June and July. Several other minor hatches of caddisflies
occur during the year.

There's a few Trico mayfly hatches that takes place on the West Walker. They
hatch in the late Summer and early Fall, usually starting about the middle of August
and lasting through September. .

July, August and September is terrestrial season. This is probably your best best
on the West Walker. Imitations of grasshoppers, ants and beetles all produce.

Baitfish and sculpin streamer fly imitations work great for much of the year. They
usually account for the largest trout caught, so make certain you have plenty
streamers with you.

If you haven't done so already, please try our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. We are
