The Dark Red Quill is the ramaleyi species of the Cinygmula genus. It is a western mayfly species that hatch from early to mid-summer. These are clinger nymph mayflies that prefer the moderate to fast water of freestone streams. They can be very important on some streams. Trout eat them in all stages of life. At times the most important thing about them is that during the time they are hatching, they may be the only mayfly hatching. You want find them from one end of the stream to the other in most cases. They will be concentrated in spots with the right types of water and there may be large quantities of them.
