Euro Nymph/High Sticking flies:

Euro nymphing is a term that includes many  styles and ways of fishing nymphs. High sticking is a method of fishing nymphs that also has been around a few years. Flipping, is a similar method of fishing for bass with conventional tackle. In essence, Euro nymphing, high sticking and flipping all have the same purpose – to present a fly or lure to a fish that’s holding in below the surface of the water. As the name suggests, Euro nymphing was developed in both Western and Eastern Europe by competition anglers. It’s not a artistic form of fly fishing, like, for instance, dry fly fishing, but it can be highly successful if you get the basic techniques of the presentation right.

A very good Euro Nymphing Fly has a fast sink rate. They are effective because they stay in the feeding zone during most of the time the fly is drifting. Many of the flies have tungsten beads. You don’t want to fish a fly that takes a long time to get down to the right depth; however, that doens’t mean you need to always tie on a heavy beaded fly. Slow moving and shallow water requires a lighter fly. In deep, fast moving water, use a fly with a heavier tungsten bead or one that’s over 3mm. Please note that the size of the body or the profile of the fly can also be a factor in the sink rate of the fly. Slim body flies sink faster than thick body flies.
