This is a very popular Atlantic Salmon pattern that’s fished the world over. This is a
variation of the Blue Doctor which was the first fly in the ‘doctor series.’ The doctor series
of flies consists of the Blue Doctor, Silver Doctor, Black Doctor, and the White Doctor. It’s
a very old fly. Dr. James Wright was the first to dress the Black Doctor.
As usual, there are many differing versions of the fly. This is what most modern anglers
think is the most effective version. It has proven effective on the landlocked Atlantic
Salmon as well as those that enter the rivers of the Eastern United States.
The color black has proven to work in both clear and dingy water. It has consistently
caught Atlantic Salmon in high and low water situations. Many anglers consider it their
“go to” fly under tough fishing conditions.
