The Perfect Fly Golden Stonefly Stonefly adult is the fully grown stage of life of the stonefly. It emerges from the nymph on the banks of the stream on rocks that protrude out of the water. The females return to the water late in the day to deposit their eggs and that is when trout dine on the adults. Fish the fly in the early afternoons until late in the day near the same water they emerged from. Floatant should be used on the dry fly.
The female Golden Stoneflies can be found depositing their eggs during the
daylight hours every once in a while in the Eastern trout streams and quite
commonly in Western and Pacific Coastal trout streams.. It would be a rare
occasion that you would find a Giant Stoneflies doing that. The adult female
Golden Stoneflies offer the only opportunity to catch trout that are feeding on the
adults. The males don’t get in the water at all unless they accidentally fall or get
blown in the water by strong winds. They hatch out of the water and they mate
and die out of the water.

If you do find Golden Stonefly females dipping down to the surface of the water
depositing their eggs, you should certainly fish an imitation of them. Our Perfect
fly imitation of the adult Golden Stonefly is a foam fly that floats high in the water
and looks quite realistic. Trout will definitely eat the egg laying females and when
they do, they will eat the Perfect fly imitation of them. Most likely you would
encounter this activity very late in the afternoons in eastern trout streams but it
may occur throughout much of the day on western trout stream. If clouds have
covered the sun for some time, they may begin earlier in the day.

Adult Presentation:
The key to the presentation, is to watch the water for stoneflies that are
depositing their eggs. That’s exactly where you want to place your imitation of the
adult Golden Stonefly. They are large enough that they are easy to spot.

You want to cast to them the easiest way you can get the fly there. There’s
nothing special about the presentation you need to make. As long as the trout
feeding on the egg layers don’t see you, any way you can get the fly in the right
areas of the stream will work, even if the fly lands with a rather splashy
presentation. I wrote fly, not fly line.

The female adult Golden Stoneflies deposit their eggs in the same water they
hatch from. This is faster water, usually riffles and runs but can be fast moving
smooth surface water. They are not found in slow moving water.
