Do you have trouble seeing and tying on small midge flies size 20 and 22, especially with the larva and pupa in tandem? That is the preferred rigging for midges. During a hatch, the Midge larvae are on the bottom and the pupae in the water column accenting to the surface. One each, Midge larva and pupa (of the same color) are pre-rigged on spools, so you can easily remove them and tie them on to your leader without any mess or fuss. The tag end of the tippet is marked with a small piece of plastic tape. The bottom fly is also taped to the inside of the spool so it doesn’t get fouled up. Size 20 midges are pre-rigged on your choice of size 5X nylon or fluorocarbon tippet. Size 22 midges are pre-rigged on your choice of size 6X nylon or fluorocarbon tippet. The larva is always the bottom fly and the pupa fly is placed approximately 16 inches above the larva fly. There is approximately 2 1/2 feet of tippet above the top pupa fly to attach to your leader.
