The Sucker Spawn Steelhead Egg fly is one of the most common egg flies used in
Steelhead Alley along the Great Lakes. It imitates sucker spawn. Steelhead feast on the
sucker’s eggs when they are in the rivers spawning. This fly was designed to imitate
cluster of sucker eggs.

The Sucker Spawn Steelhead Egg fly should be fished allowing the fly to bounce along
the bottom during the Winter when the suckers are in the tributary steelhead streams
spawning. It’s usually fished on the swing using the traditional wet fly method. The sucker
spawn fly originated in Central Pennsylvania. As far as we know, the originator of the fly
cannot be determined.

The fly was pushed and made popular by Chuck Farneth in the early 1980’s. He
redesigned the fly by tying it on scud type hooks so that the fly is in a circular shape to
imitate the sucker’s eggs.

Fish the Sucker Spawn Steelhead Egg fly on the bottom during the Winter when suckers
are in the river spawning. It’s usually fished on the swing.
