The Perfect Fly Western Ginger Quill Dun is an excellent imitation of the adult stage of life of the mayfly. It imitates the mayfly as it drifts or floats on the surface, drying it wet wings enough to fly off the water onto the banks, bushes or trees where it will eventually change into the spinner stage of life. It even imitates the dun down to two or three tails and it two upright wings. It is fished on the surface as a dry fly. It should be treated with floatant.
The Western Ginger Quills Perfect Fly imitations are a hook size 14. The dun can be an
important phase for anglers to imitate especially if you want to fish a dry fly instead of an
emerger. As I mentioned before, these duns generally leave the water fairly quickly. The
trout seem to be aware of that and many of them are eaten prior to emerging into a full
grown dun. You will often see the swirl of a trout eating an emerger. This usually just
breaks the surface of the water. You can still catch trout on the dun pattern and that is
certainly more appealing way to fish for many anglers.
Presentation:
You want to fish the edges of the fast water or seams of current and pocket water
using an upstream or up and across approach. Leaders eight to ten feet long
equipped with two-foot long 4X or 5X tippets should work fine.
There are occasions you may find these mayflies in smooth water but they are far more
prone to be found in the pocket water of the smaller streams.
