Fly Fishing Bald Eagle Creek Pennsylvania
Before we begin, be aware there are two streams in central Pennsylvania with the name of Bald Eagle Creek. To confuse it even more, they are close to each other. The smaller stream is a tributary of the Little Juniata River. The larger one is about forty miles long and is a tributary of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. This is about the larger Bald Eagle Creek.

The stream flows into Sayers Dam at Bald Eagle State Park. This is a freestone stream, not the usual spring creeks that are prominent in the Central Pennsylvania. The stream parallels State Route #220. There’s plenty of access along the road. Fly fishing Bald Eagle Creek varies greatly depending on where you fish it.

Bald Eagle Creek is heavily stocked by the state and popular with local anglers. The stream can become crowded in areas just after the season opens in April. Under the right conditions, fly fishing Bald Eagle Creek can be a pleasurable experience.

Spring Creek flows into Bald Eagle at Milesburg. This adds cool limestone water to the stream and greatly improves it. The fly fishing opportunities are much better in the Summer below the Spring Creek confluence. This section has a good population of wild brown trout as well as stocked trout.

The lower section also has a much higher aquatic insect population due to its higher pH. There are good hatches of mayflies, caddisflies and some stoneflies. There’s still
some anglers that catch the trout to eat, but many are released. Few of them catch the wild browns which are much more selective.
