Fly Fishing Big Wilson Creek Virginia
Some anglers may get the name of this Virginia trout stream mixed up because in its headwaters, it is usually just called Wilson Creek. I guess that’s because it isn’t so big in the upper areas of the stream.

The upper waters are not stocked but the lower section is. This is another of the Mt. Rogers National Recreational Area streams. It can be accessed from state road #817, an unpaved road that follows the stream to its headwaters.

There’s a special regulation stretch of water in its upper parts that requires single hook, catch and release for trout under a certain size. Make sure you check the current regulations before fishing. Although there is road access in the headwaters, we almost
destroyed an SUV traveling them. Fly fishing Big Wilson Creek can take a toll on your vehicle.

We have fished this creek in several areas on three occasions. It seems fairly easy to catch the stocked rainbows in the lower section and not very difficult to catch its native brook trout in the upper reaches.

We get a lot of good reports from customers fishing the river. There are usually some huge fish stocked in the mix that some enjoy catching.

Like all small mountain streams in this part of the South, you can easily catch more bushes and trees than you can catch trout. Other than that, if you can get a small dry fly in the little plunge pools without spooking the brookies, they will usually respond very
well.

Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for Big Wilson Creek
Virginia
Fly Line:
You will probably enjoy using a light fly line to catch the brook trout. Certainly you will be
using mostly small and most likely, dry flies for the brook trout. We would say the ideal fly
line size would be a 4 weight, floating fly line.  If you fish heavy nymphs and small streamers, you may prefer a 5 weight fly line to deliver the larger flies. A 6 weight line would be best for fishing larger size streamers and large nymphs.

Fly Rod:
Depending on which fly line sizes you prefer, then you would want a fly rod for each line size you chose. The four, five and six weight fly rods should be nine feet in length with a medium fast to fast action.

Fly Reel:
The reels for the four, five and six weight fly rods should be as light as possible and have
decent drags.

Leaders:
You should probably be using at least a 7 and one half foot leader. Most of the time you
would probably want to use a 9 foot leader. I would suggest having them in sizes ranging
from 1X for streamers, up to 6X for small dry fly imitations in both the 7and one half and nine foot lengths.

Tippet:
Make sure you have plenty of extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 1X to 6X.

Waders:
Waders would be necessary for the Big Wilson Creek unless it is warm enough for you to
wet wade. We recommend the breathable type.

Wading Boots:
Most of the bottom is rock. You would not want cleats. Felt soles are the best. We haven’t
tried the new rubber soles on this stream yet, but we would think they would work just fine. There is little algae in the stream.

Landing Net:
A landing net would be a purely optional item.

Wading Staff:
A wading staff is recommended if the water is high.

Trout Flies:
Naturally we recommend “Perfect Flies”. We think they are the best flies you can purchase. We have both specific imitations of all the insects and other trout food as well
as low priced, but high quality generic and attractor trout flies.
