Fly Fishing Canadaway Creek New York
Canadaway Creek is home of one of Lake Erie’s steelhead runs. It’s a medium size tributary of the lake located near Dunkirk and Fredonia, New York. Steelhead range from the mouth of the creek upstream to Laona Falls, a total of just over six miles from the lake. Fly fishing Canadaway Creek at the right time of the year can be great. Steelhead are in the Canadaway Creek from the middle of October until early May.

Public access is provided by a Dept. of Conservation fishing access area located off of Route #5. There’s just over half mile of access in this location plus an additional .2 miles of public fishing rights easements.

Most of the steelhead are of average size, ranging from four to twelve pounds but occasionally larger ones are caught.

The upper section of Canadaway Creek offers brown trout fishing opportunities. The Canadaway Creek Wildlife Management Area has 1.6 miles of public fishing access. This section of the creek is stocked with sizeable brown trout each Spring. This area is located near the little community of Griswold.

From the mouth of the creek on Lake Erie, trout and salmon season is open year-round. Above the falls to the headwaters of Canadaway Creek trout season opens April 1 and closes on October 15.

Most of the fly fishing for steelhead is done using the traditional wet fly swing method. Spey rods and Spey flies are becoming more popular. Salmon egg patterns and nymphs also work well in Canadaway Creek.
