Fly Fishing The Croton River New York
The East Branch of the Croton River is an excellent tailwater. It lies between the Diverting and the East Branch Reservoirs. This area is located in Putnam County just above the New York City.

The Croton River is a stocked stream but it has some excellent holdover brown and rainbow trout. It’s waters below the “bubble”, just below the dam, stays cool a long way downstream all summer long. The stream is the classic pool, riffle, run configuration that’s common in the state of New York. There’s some large, deep pools that help maintain plenty of large holdover trout.

Although there are other areas of the river to fish, fly fishing the Croton River is best in the tailwater section mile and a half stretch that lives between the Diverting and East Branch Reservoirs. It can be reached by the majority of people in the New York City area in a very short time.M

Considering it’s a tailwater, the Croton River has excellent aquatic insect hatches. mayflies, caddisflies and midges are very plentiful and there’s even a few stoneflies.

The rules require artificial lures and flies only. One trout per day of fourteen inches or larger can be creeled. Even so, most anglers practice catch and release.

To reach the special regulation area of the East Branch of the Croton River, exit off Interstate highway 84 or ( – 684 near their intersection on Route 6 or 22. The little village of Brewster in on the stream. You will find access at the bridges and parking spaces along the river. A trail follows most of the stream.

The only downfall to fishing the Croton River is it is popular. After all, it’s only about an hour drive from Manhattan.
